Biological Safety Cabinets – Baker

By Noah Clinical Laboratory | Updated October 12, 2023

The biosafety cabinets are classified as Class II, Type A. As per the HHS Publication No. (CDC) 93-8395, Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories US Dept. of Health and Human Services Public Health Service Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and National Institutes of Health, 3rd Edition, March, 1993:
Open-fronted biological safety cabinets are primary barriers and offer significant levels of protection to lab personnel and to the environment when used with good techniques. The Class II biological safety cabinet provides protection from external contamination of the materials being manipulated inside the cabinet.

Properly maintained Class II BSC’s, when used in conjunction with good techniques, provide an effective containment system for safe manipulation of moderate and high-risk microorganisms (Biosafety Level 2). Class II BSC’s have inward face velocities (75-100 linear feet per minute) that provide comparable levels of containment for lab workers and the immediate environment from infectious aerosols generated within the cabinet. Class II BSC’s have the advantage of providing the protection to the research material by high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration of the airflow down across the work surface (vertical laminar flow). Design, construction, and performance standards for Class II BSC’s have been developed by the National Sanitation Foundation International.

Type A cabinets are suitable for work with microbiological research in the absence of volatile or toxic chemicals and radio nuclides, since air is re-circulated within the work area. Type A cabinets may be exhausted through HEPA filters into the lab, or outside via a thimble connection to the exhaust ductwork.
